Goal Setting
With a new year approaching everyone is talking about setting new goals but for some people setting goals is difficult and many people just don’t know how to go about it.
I will share with you some of the tips I have learned on the goal setting process:
The first step is the best part – start off by thinking about your ideal life – what would it look like, how much money would you earn, what kind of lifestyle would you create, how healthy are you. Importantly, what about your wealth? How much do you want to save and accumulate in your working lifetime?
Write this down. In fact your goals must be written down, they must be clear, specific, detailed and measurable. Think of this as your order form (you are putting in an order for a good life!)
Set a deadline – for each goal you should have a deadline or sub deadline. For example, if you want to achieve financial independence then you may set a 10 or 20-year goal. You then need to work out what you need to achieve year by year so that you know how much to save and invest to reach this in your overall timeframe.
Identify any obstacles – what’s stopping you from doing this now? Is there anything you need to do/learn before you can start. What might stop you in future?
Identify people whose help and cooperation you will require to achieve your goal. Let’s face it no one gets to the top alone! If your goal is to lose weight and be healthy, maybe you need a personal trainer or dietician in your life. Do not make the mistake of thinking you can do everything yourself.
Make a list of everything you will have to do to achieve your goal. This is the plan outlining the steps you need to take to achieve this goal. The more you can detail the steps and activities you need to do, the greater your chance of success.
Take action. Your goals are just a wish if you do not start to follow the steps you have listed under each goal. If you have many goals, highlight your top three and then choose one to start. It takes discipline to push yourself to act. There are countless ways to keep up your focus. Personally, I put tasks in my calendar so they flash up at me daily.
Share your goals – choose a goal buddy/mentor or trusted friend or colleague and share your goals. This will help you to stay accountable. It’s even better if you can also help them to stay on track with their goals
Goodluck! I look forward to hearing your goals next time we meet!
